My love for photo albums started when I was little.

I’m an only child, and growing up there were plenty of photos of me. What there weren’t many of were photographs of my parents as children. So whenever one surfaced, it felt important. I wanted to know everything. How old were they. What were they doing. Who were they with. Every once in a while one of my grandmothers would pull out a photo album, and it felt like a moment. I never knew where it lived because it appeared so rarely. I always wished it came out more often. I was hungry for those stories and for a glimpse of who my parents were before they were mine.

Becoming a mom changed everything.

Albums feel even more meaningful now. Time moves faster than I ever imagined it could. My son is now 10, and some days I find myself wishing I could slow it all down, even briefly.

Photography gives me a way to do that.

For me it has always been about quality over quantity. Of course I take lots of iPhone photos, but I know myself well enough to admit I probably won’t scroll back very far. What matters most to me is documenting our life intentionally. Every year I hire a photographer to photograph our family, and every year I turn that season into a photo album.

Most years I actually make two albums. One from our annual family session and another from a meaningful trip or chapter, gathering everyday iPhone photos into something tangible. Not just for me and not just for now, but for my son to have one day when he’s grown and telling his own story.

I’ve been using Miller’s since 2021 because their albums are beautifully made, easy to design, and always arrive quickly.

This year feels especially meaningful. We’re planning a trip to Sicily to show our son his roots and introduce him to family overseas. I also upgraded from my iPhone to a Fuji X100VI. It’s a small camera I genuinely enjoy carrying with me. It encourages me to slow down and be more intentional. But it doesn’t replace what matters most to me, which is being in the photos too.

Photos aren’t meant to live quietly in the cloud. They’re meant to be printed, shared, held, and revisited. Albums aren’t just about remembering moments. They create a sense of belonging.

All of my son’s albums live in his closet, and he knows exactly where they are. Nothing makes me happier than walking into his room and seeing a few pulled out, followed by a stream of questions.
