Your shopping guide for your family session and other helpful tips

One of the most overwhelming decisions you must make after booking your session is what to wear. There are so many things to consider when planning what you should wear, let alone the rest of your family.  Are we going dressy or casual?  What colors should we wear?  What if it’s cold or rainy? Even when you answer all of these questions, where do you actually find it?  This guide is here to help you decide what to wear for your family session and where to find it.

Where to Start

When planning what to wear for your family session, I always suggest starting at the end. Where are these photos most likely to end up?  Regardless if it is your living room, bedroom, or library, use the color scheme of that room as the base for the colors of your outfits. If your living room is primarily blues and grays, plan your outfits to be of similar colors.

Plan Your Outfits First

Once you know what colors to look for, start with yourself first. Find your outfit first based on what your preferences are, and coordinate your family's outfits based on yours.  If you chose a navy dress, a gray sweater with navy pants or tights would be an excellent option for another family member.  Steer away from being too matchy-matchy.  Instead, coordinate your outfits based on a chosen color scheme.

Things to Avoid

While you shop for options, keep the following things in mind. First, avoid clothing with large symbols or words, neon colors, and overwhelming patterns.  We move a lot during sessions. Do your clothes move well without revealing too much?  Your heels may be the perfect touch to the outfit, but they may not be the best for the field that we will be in.  I suggest bringing a pair of flats to do the walking in and then switching to your heels when needed.
